Steve Cable has made outstanding contributions to education and athletics. Throughout his career, he has served students with diligence and honor, bringing great credit to himself, public education, and his alma mater, Pueblo East High School.

As a student at East High, Steve was a standout multi-sport athlete. He lettered in varsity football and wrestling for three years and competed in track. His wrestling achievements include being named outstanding wrestler, an East Invitational Championship, a District Championship, and two state qualifications. In football, he was named a 1st Team All-Steel City and South-Central League Linebacker. He was also recognized as "Most Athletic" in the yearbook and "Outstanding Senior Athlete" by coaches at the Spring All Sports Ceremony.

Steve continued his athletic pursuits in college, playing football at CSU in 1972, Fort Hays in 1973, and UNC in 1974. He graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 1978 with a B.A. in Industrial Arts and went on to teach at Glenwood Springs High School from 1978 to 2008. During his 30-year tenure, he taught Woodworking, Drafting, and Computer Science, and served as Athletic Director for his final nine years.

His coaching legacy in Glenwood Springs is equally impressive. Steve coached football from 1978 to 1988, contributing to State Championships in 1978 and 1980. He also coached in the Colorado All-State Football game in 1980.  In wrestling, he was a mainstay from 1978 to 1999, coaching numerous district and state champions, including a division 1 All-American. He also dedicated time to coaching middle school wrestlers from 1995 to 1997.

Beyond coaching, Mr. Cable was a respected football official from 1989 to 2018, officiating multiple state playoff and 3 state championship games. He represented the Local Officials’ Association at the state level from 2000 to 2004.  As an Athletic Director, he represented the Western Slope League on the CHSAA Board of Control from 2005-2008. He also served on State Selection Committees for both volleyball (2005-2006) and football (2007.)

On a personal note, Steve married Sally Kochenberger in 1981. They raised two children in Glenwood Springs: their son, Rob, is a charter school principal, and their daughter, Jeri, is an educator. They are the proud grandparents of seven granddaughters.
