James Hernandez, a 1972 gold cord graduate, earned a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Notre Dame, a Medical Degree from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, and a Master of Science in Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison emcompassing both MBA and MPH skills.

His past honors include Notre Dame Scholar, Vice President of his medical school class at Colorado, and an award from the Governor of Minnesota for his work in AIDS education in Mankato, MN. Two of his laboratory teams at the Mayo Clinic have been nominated for Excellence through Teamwork recognition.

Dr. Hernandez is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. He has held several boards of director positions in pathology and laboratory medicine at the state and national levels. He served on the Board of Trustees of the American Pathology Foundation. He is also the former editor of the American Pathology Review.
